01 / Safety & infrastructure

LCG RailGUARDAdditional protection.
Where roads and railways meet.

Vehicles entering level crossings in error can have serious consequences. LCG RailGUARD is being developed as a supplementary, modular safety system intended to add a physical restraint function to existing protection.

At its core is the TWINSLIDE NETBARRIER: roadside housings, extending elements with a catch net and a clearly visible warning. The configuration is subject to technical assessment and coordination for each site.

Modular by design

Adapted to the crossing, installation space and local requirements.

Planned together

Coordination with the municipality, infrastructure operator and the relevant regional authorities.

Knowledge & facts

Understanding crossings. Advancing safety.

Austrian network data and European accident statistics show why level crossings deserve particular attention.

A closer look

What does “active protection” mean?

Active protection uses lights or barriers with lights. Other crossings use road signs. The railway authority determines protection.

What can accident statistics tell us?

It describes recorded events over a period. The count alone assesses neither the risk at a particular crossing nor the effect of new technology. Traffic volumes and local conditions also need to be considered for a site assessment.

What additional role is RailGUARD intended to serve?

LCG is investigating an additional physical restraint before the danger zone. A pilot must assess restraint performance, safe clearances, fault conditions, winter operation and interfaces with existing protection. The statistics do not demonstrate the effectiveness of the LCG system.

People at the heart of it

For people on the move.

Whether travelling to work, school or friends, local people are at the heart of our development. Together with municipalities and infrastructure operators, we aim to assess additional protection for level crossings.
