Developing today. Thinking of tomorrow.
A healthy environment, available resources and places worth living in unite us as a human family. Progress should serve people – today and for generations to come.
An idea rooted in the forest
Saxon mining administrator Hans Carl von Carlowitz set out the principle of sustained use in “Sylvicultura oeconomica”. Put simply: harvest no more timber than the forest can regrow. He is regarded as a founder of the forestry principle of sustainability.
German Environment Agency · History (source, new tab)Responsibility across generations
The United Nations Brundtland Commission brought future generations into focus: meeting present needs while preserving the opportunities of those who come after us.
United Nations · Sustainability (source, new tab)Our benchmark at LCG
We see environmental protection, social responsibility and economic viability as connected. We aim to consider technology from materials and operation through to repair and reuse.
Using modern technology responsibly
AI as a tool for conserving resources.
Artificial intelligence opens new ways to understand complex relationships and use resources more precisely. Three examples illustrate the potential:
Plan energy around demand
AI can improve forecasts of consumption and generation, helping to coordinate storage, heat supply and renewable energy more effectively.
IEA · Energy and AI, 2025 (source, new tab)Keep materials in circulation
AI-assisted recognition and sorting can improve recycling and help recover useful materials more precisely.
BMUKN · AI for environment and climate (source, new tab)Anticipate maintenance needs
Analysis of operating data can reveal anomalies early, supporting better maintenance and operational planning and reducing avoidable downtime.
IEA · Energy and AI, 2025 (source, new tab)The overall footprint matters. AI itself consumes electricity and resources. Its benefits must be assessed for each application, including the demands of data centres and hardware. Efficiency alone does not make an application sustainable. BMUKN (source, new tab)
Responsibility remains with people.
For RailGUARD, AlpSNOW, EnergyCELL and BlueVANTAGE, our ambition is to assess resource needs early, aim for durable solutions and verify improvements in pilot projects. AI support is a possible development path; professional judgement and responsibility remain with people.
